Anzhi target Rooney?

Anzhi Makhachkala team director Roberto Carlos has refused to rule out a move for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

The mega-rich Russian side have spent big since owner Suleyman Kerimov purchased the club in 2011, including the capture of star striker Samuel Eto'o.

Carlos said that Kerimov has the financial muscle required to land any player he wants, but also stressed that the club is trying to "change" its free-spending image.

"[Rooney's] one of the best players in the world and any team would be happy to have him in their squad," Carlos told Sky Sports News. "He's still a very young player. Of course I could not say when, and if, it will happen.

"It's not only Anzhi who want to buy him. There are plenty of teams in Italy and Spain, all over the world, who are eager to have a player like Rooney.

"[Kerimov] is capable of doing everything. If the owner of Anzhi has a wish to buy somebody, he will go and do it. But we are trying to change the image of the club. It's not just about money."

Anzhi play Liverpool in the Europa League tonight.
