Southgate: 'Young deserves England recall'

England boss Gareth Southgate says that Ashley Young deserves his recall to the Three Lions squad due to his performances for Manchester United.

England boss Gareth Southgate has suggested that he is keen on using Ashley Young at wing-back after his performances for Manchester United this season.

Young has earned a recall to the England squad for the games with Germany and Brazil after featuring in various positions down the flanks for United since the start of the current campaign.

The wideman earned the last of his 30 caps in 2013, but Southgate has insisted that the former Watford and Aston Villa star is fully deserving of another chance on the international stage.

The 47-year-old told reporters: "Young's performances warrant a recall. We want to play with wing-backs – I think it's a role he can perform, left or right, very well. He's played very well for Manchester United.

"Generally speaking we want to look at younger players, and develop the team, but I've always said if a more senior player is playing well and warrants the call-up, we should include them."

Young has made eight starts for United in all competitions this season.
