Ryan Giggs: 'Fans will love Memphis Depay'

Ryan Giggs says that new Manchester United signing Memphis Depay is an "exciting player" who can make a difference with his quality from set pieces.

Manchester United assistant manager Ryan Giggs has claimed that new signing Memphis Depay will provide great entertainment for the club's fans.

The 21-year-old completed his move to Old Trafford earlier this month, having come through the youth ranks at PSV Eindhoven.

He scored 28 goals last season to help the Dutch club to win the league, with a number of his strikes coming from free kicks.

It is his ability from set pieces that excites Giggs, and the Welshman believes that Depay will add something to United's game that they have been missing since David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo left the club.

"He is the type Old Trafford will warm to," Giggs told The Times. "He's an exciting player, but there's also substance behind it. He was top scorer in the Dutch league and got plenty of assists as well. He's a 'United' type. Our fans demand exciting players, players who can get them off their seats and score spectacular goals.

"One thing we probably have lacked since Cristiano - and Becks before him – is free kicks. And it looks like Depay has a great track record from free kicks as well. Over a season, if you can score more from free-kicks and corners it adds up and makes a real difference in winning games. So, no pressure...but hopefully he'll score 10 free kicks every year.

"Old Trafford is the right stage for a player like him. Because if you try things that don't come off the fans will stay behind you. You're at a club where they want you to do things off the cuff, to entertain them."

Depay, who has won 17 caps for the Netherlands, scored 50 goals in 124 appearances for PSV.
