Everton striker Wayne Rooney says that Manchester United forward Anthony Martial is best when deployed from the "inside-left" by Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho.

Everton striker Wayne Rooney has said that Manchester United forward Anthony Martial is best when deployed from the "inside-left" by Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho.

Martial joined United in 2015 for an initial £36m fee, but the Frenchman has struggled to nail down a starting position under previous boss Louis van Gaal and current manager Mourinho.

Rooney, who shared the pitch with Martial until the former's departure to Everton in the summer, said that his former teammate can be the one of the best when played in the right position.

"Martial, ability-wise, is incredible. But it is, 'How do you get the best out of him?'" Rooney told talkSPORT. "For me, his best position is inside-left.

"Knowing Anthony the way I know him, if you get the best out of him he is up there with the best ability-wise.

"Sometimes it is difficult to get to know him as a person or a character because of the way he is, but when you do get to know him, you just keep him happy."

Martial has featured sporadically for Mourinho's side this term, but is yet to find his ideal role in the United outfit.
