Brendan Rodgers says that Liverpool will be able to compete with Manchester United in the future after closing "the gap in the squad".

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes that his side can challenge Manchester United for major honours in the future.

The Reds suffered a 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford on Sunday to fall 24 points behind the Premier League leaders.

"We are 24 points behind Manchester United but we are not 24 points behind in quality," BBC Sport quotes him as saying. "The difference is down to the squad.

"Once we close the gap in the squad I have great hope we will be able to challenge. Today's an example of that."

Liverpool are currently eighth in the Premier League table.
