Phil Neville: 'Manchester United wanted Blaise Matuidi last year'

Neville: 'United tried to sign Matuidi'

Former coach Phil Neville has revealed that Manchester United tried to sign Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Blaise Matuidi last year.

Neville was on the United coaching staff under former manager David Moyes last season, when the club were understood to be targeting a new central midfielder.

Matuidi played for PSG in their Champions League last-16 first leg draw against Chelsea tonight, and Neville told BBC Sport that he scouted him last year.

He said: "We wanted to sign him. We were really interested."

Matuidi moved to PSG from Saint-Etienne in 2011.
