Rio Ferdinand claims that Manchester United want no less than to win the Europa League.

Rio Ferdinand has insisted that Manchester United want to win the Europa League following their Champions League exit last night.

The Red Devils - who needed at least a draw to progress to the knockout stages of the competition - were beaten 2-1 at St Jakob-Park in Basel, which left them one point adrift of the Swiss club in third place in Group C.

While Sir Alex Ferguson has expressed his disappointment, Ferdinand is adamant that the club will now be determined to win the Europa League.

"We're in the Europa League now," he told MUTV. "I've always said that whatever competition we're in we don't enter it to come second or to get knocked out in the early stages. We're always in it to win it and this is no different.

"Nights at Old Trafford, under the lights, the Champions League music... that's what you live for. We've gone out early this year and we're disappointed. But we can't blame anyone else but ourselves.

"We have to look back at the games at Old Trafford. We've not done enough to win those games. The manager's always said that if you don't win your home games you don't deserve to go through. That's the case this season."

Manchester United last failed to reach the knockout stages of the competition in 2005.
