David de Gea: 'Manchester United need coach like Jose Mourinho'

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea admits that the club needed a manager like Jose Mourinho to take over after two years of underachievement under Louis van Gaal.

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has admitted that the club "needed" a manager of Jose Mourinho's calibre to take over at Old Trafford.

Mourinho succeeded Louis van Gaal last month after the Dutchman failed to deliver a top-four finish during the 2015-16 campaign, although he did steer the club to their first silverware since Sir Alex Ferguson's departure.

However, De Gea has admitted that they were not good enough under Van Gaal and is hoping for brighter times ahead in the new era.

"I came to United to win trophies and it is true that these last two years we have not been at the level this club deserves," he told Cadena Ser.

"But hopefully, with the change of coach, United will be back at the highest level. I think at United we needed a coach like him - a coach with personality and a winning coach. The signing of Mourinho is a wise move."

Mourinho has already started to make an impact at Old Trafford, signing Eric Bailly and extending Michael Carrick's contract by an extra year.
