Tom Cleverley delighted to captain Manchester United

Cleverley delighted to captain Man Utd

Tom Cleverley expressed his pride at being handed the Manchester United captaincy in their 3-2 win against Roma.

New manager Louis van Gaal has yet to name his permanent skipper following the departures of Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra, and Cleverley was delighted to captain the side in their pre-season victory on Saturday.

The Mirror quotes him as saying: "It was fantastic, a really proud moment. I've been here since I was 11. Now, whatever I go on to do, I can always say I captained Manchester United. At 24, that's not bad.

"We were disappointed to concede two goals. We should have seen the game out better but we are still learning and progressing.

"It was obviously good game preparation for us in tough conditions, the pitch was quite sticky and it was warm, at altitude, against very tough opposition. Roma came second in Serie A last year."

Meanwhile, United striker Wayne Rooney has revealed that he wants the captaincy on a permanent basis.
