Former Manchester United forward Eric Cantona claims that Jose Mourinho 'is the wrong manager' for the Red Devils, insisting that Pep Guardiola should be in charge.

Former Manchester United forward Eric Cantona has said that Jose Mourinho 'is the wrong manager' for the Red Devils, insisting that Pep Guardiola should be in charge at Old Trafford.

United have won three trophies since Mourinho's arrival and returned to second position in the Premier League table last season following a disappointing few years in England's top flight.

The 20-time English champions have lost two of their first four matches of the 2018-19 Premier League season, however, and Mourinho's future at the club is believed to be uncertain.

Cantona, who turned out for United between 1992 and 1997, has said that Mourinho's style of football is not right for his former club and believes that Manchester City boss Guardiola should be at the helm.

"It's not so good," Cantona told the Daily Mail. "But it is early in the season... too early to tell. Manchester United is a great club and will always be great. They will win things, I know they will.

"But the way they play? Not good. The manager has them playing the wrong way for the fans. No fun, no creativity. I like Mourinho. He has a good personality but not for United - they should have Guardiola as coach. He should be there, but he is doing magic with that other club. The club I cannot name."

United will return to Premier League action with a trip to in-form Watford next weekend.
