Bruno Fernandes suspended for Manchester United's trip to Liverpool

Bruno Fernandes suspended for Man United's trip to Liverpool

Manchester United will be without their captain Bruno Fernandes for next weekend's Premier League clash with Liverpool at Anfield through suspension.

The Portugal international was booked for dissent in the closing stages of Man United's 3-0 loss to Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

The milestone yellow card - his fifth in the Premier League this season - means that Fernandes will be banned for the contest with Jurgen Klopp's side.

Man United will play once more before their trip to Liverpool, welcoming Bayern Munich to Old Trafford in the Champions League on Tuesday, and Fernandes will be available for that fixture.

The 29-year-old was one of three Red Devils players to be carded in the disastrous performance against Bournemouth, with Sergio Reguilon and Rasmus Hojlund also handed yellows.

Fernandes has scored five times and registered five assists in 22 appearances for Man United this season, but he missed a penalty against Chelsea on Wednesday and struggled to make his mark in the loss to Bournemouth.

The Red Devils will also be without the services of Tyrell Malacia, Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez through injury against Liverpool, but Victor Lindelof could overcome the problem that forced him to miss out against Bournemouth.

Mason Mount and Amad Diallo are also back in training, but Christian Eriksen is unlikely to be available for selection until the end of the month due to a knee problem.

"We lacked many things and that's why we don't get the result today," Fernandes told reporters after the clash with Bournemouth at Old Trafford.

"Everything was lower than the levels in the game before and that's why when you play teams like Bournemouth, who are really aggressive and on the front foot, they press you, and you think it's going to be easy, you get these kind of results.

"Everything was underperforming. Creativity, movement and arriving with bodies into the box. Most of the time we arrived with one or two players, but in the last game we had more getting in the box to score a goal.

"Today, it was, as I said, underperforming. We just lack consistency and that's a big part of football. It's really important to be consistent every game and we're not being."

Man United have now lost seven times in the Premier League this season and 11 in all competitions, while they have been beaten 18 times in 2023, which is their most losses in a calendar year since 1989.
