How Manchester United could line up against Southampton

Sports Mole looks at how Manchester United could line up in Tuesday's Premier League clash with Southampton.

Manchester United will be looking to return to winning ways in the Premier League when they welcome Southampton to Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side will enter the match off the back of a goalless draw with Arsenal on Saturday, which left the Red Devils second in the table, three points behind leaders Manchester City.

The 20-time English champions have lost four times at Old Trafford in the league this season, including a 2-1 defeat to basement side Sheffield United last week.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how United could line up on their return to the field.

United's main injury doubt surrounds Scott McTominay, who was forced off in the first half of Saturday's clash with Arsenal due to stomach cramp, and it remains to be seen if the Scotland international is available.

Solskjaer will not take any chances when it comes to the midfielder amid a busy fixture list, and it would not be a surprise to see Nemanja Matic earn a recall in the middle of the park.

Fit-again Eric Bailly could also replace Victor Lindelof in the middle of the defence, with the latter still struggling to overcome a troublesome back problem, which has seen him miss matches in recent weeks.

Solskjaer is expected to resist the temptation to shuffle his pack, but it would be a surprise to see Edinson Cavani in the XI once again as the Uruguay international played the full 90 against Arsenal and could be held back to ensure that he is fresh for Saturday's clash with Everton.

As a result, Anthony Martial could get the nod through the middle despite the Frenchman's goal troubles; Mason Greenwood is an option for the centre-forward and right-sided attacking spot, but Marcus Rashford should feature, while Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes are unlikely to be dropped due to the importance of the match.

Amad Diallo scored twice for United's Under-23s side against Liverpool on Saturday, and the recent arrival could come into the manager's thinking for a spot in the squad here.
