Louis van Gaal: 'Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger could miss Euro 2016'

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal reveals that Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger may be forced to sit out Euro 2016 because of a knee ligament injury.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has revealed that Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger could miss this summer's Euro 2016 tournament in France.

Schweinsteiger damaged knee ligaments while on international duty with Die Mannschaft last week and Van Gaal, has now revealed that his chances of playing again this season are slim.

"It is a tragic injury because the expectation is not so good for him in respect of the European Championships, but you never know," Van Gaal told reporters.

"I hope that he can reach that, but it shall be difficult."

There was better news from Van Gaal on England skipper Wayne Rooney, who the Dutchman said is "doing great" and may return from a similar injury to Schweinsteiger's later this month.
