Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has revealed that new signing Matheus Cunha was not involved in Wednesday's pre-season friendly with Bournemouth due to "fatigue".
The Brazil international had started Man United's opening two friendlies of the summer, debuting against Leeds United in Sweden before taking to the field for the first whistle of the team's opening match of their pre-season tour against West Ham United on Saturday night.
However, the recent arrival from Wolverhampton Wanderers was a notable absentee from the squad that was selected for the Premier League Summer Series clash against Bournemouth, which ended in a 4-1 success for the Red Devils.
Amorim has said that "fatigue" kept the attacker out against the Cherries, but he is expected to return to action against Everton on Saturday, while that match may also bring a debut for Bryan Mbeumo.
"Cunha has fatigue. We need to assess all the players and we have to be careful with everyone," Amorim told reporters.
"He’s available for the next one (against Everton on Sunday). Matheus felt a little bit fatigued. He was ready to play, he wants to give everything but we need to be careful."
Cunha missed Bournemouth contest due to "fatigue"
There had also been some concern when Harry Maguire was replaced at the interval of the game with Bournemouth, as the centre-back was the only player withdrawn for the Red Devils at that stage.
Amorim said that a recent injury problem means that he is being careful when it comes to the experienced defender's fitness.
“He had an issue during the holidays, during training,” Amorim told reporters. “They were training in the holidays. e’s a little bit late, so we have to be careful with him.
“It’s just a little bit fatigue with the trainings, so we are trying to control everything and saving all the players, to give the exact minutes they need.”
Amorim "really pleased" with performance against Bournemouth
Rasmus Hojlund, Patrick Dorgu, Amad Diallo and Ethan Williams were on the scoresheet in Man United's 4-1 win over Bournemouth, and Amorim has hailed his team for their display.
“Really pleased. I think the intensity was there. They are so focused in the games. They are really focused in training. They are bonding with each other. So, it was a good test," said the manager.
"We controlled really well Evanilson and [Antoine] Semenyo and that is really important. We pressed high. I think we improved the way we had our possession. It was not so fast, like against West Ham, so the lads are hearing everything, and they are trying.
“It's really important because first of all, everyone has to be prepared. Then I think we improve in the physicality of the game. We are more competitive. That is really important and we suffered a lot last season. We had some issues in the corners defending, but we attacked really well. So we have a lot to do, but it's a good feeling to see the team playing like this.”
Man United will round off their pre-season tour of the United States with a friendly against Everton on Saturday night before heading back to the United Kingdom for their last game of the summer against Fiorentina on August 9.
