Manchester United team news: Injury, suspension list vs. Liverpool

Sports Mole rounds up Manchester United's latest injury and suspension news ahead of Sunday's Premier League showdown with bitter rivals Liverpool at Anfield.

Manchester United face arguably the most daunting assignment in world football at the moment when they travel to Anfield to take on bitter rivals Liverpool on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp's side have made the best start to a season in the history of Europe's top five leagues and go into the game without defeat in their last 38 league outings, amassing 104 points over that time.

United will have had their own confidence boosted by back-to-back wins and clean sheets ahead of this match, but they will be still be major underdogs as they aim to end Liverpool's 51-match unbeaten streak at home in the league.

Here, Sports Mole rounds up United's latest injury and suspension news ahead of the contest.

Marcus Rashford

Status: Major doubt
Type of injury: Back
Possible return date: January 19 (vs. Liverpool)

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took a risk that he admitted "backfired" when he brought Marcus Rashford on against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday night. United's top-scorer subsequently aggravated an ongoing back issue, making him a major doubt for this trip to Anfield. United will give him as much time as possible to prove his fitness, but Solskjaer admitted that he is more likely to miss the game.

Eric Bailly

Status: Major doubt
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: January 19 (vs. Liverpool)

Eric Bailly featured for United's Under-23 side last week having missed the entire season so far through a serious knee injury. The Ivorian must now rebuild his fitness levels and is highly unlikely to be included in the squad for this match.

Paul Pogba

Status: Out
Type of injury: Ankle
Possible return date: January 29 (vs. Manchester City)

It has now been three-and-a-half months since Paul Pogba started a game for United, and his latest ankle injury is expected to keep him sidelined until the end of January at the earliest having required surgery.

Scott McTominay

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: February 23 (vs. Watford)

Scott McTominay's absence further limits Solskjaer's midfield options, with the Scotland international expected back in February at the earliest after suffering a knee injury on Boxing Day.

Axel Tuanzebe

Status: Out
Type of injury: Hamstring
Possible return date: January 29 (vs. Man City)

Axel Tuanzebe is closing in on a return from the hamstring injury which has kept him sidelined since mid-December, but this weekend's showdown will come too soon for him.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah

Status: Major doubt
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: January 19 (vs. Liverpool)

Timothy Fosu-Mensah is in a similar boat to Bailly in that he is now focusing on building up his match fitness after playing for the Under-23s last week.

Marcos Rojo

Status: Out
Type of injury: Muscle
Possible return date: January 22 (vs. Burnley)

Sunday's match will come too soon for Marcos Rojo, but the Argentine is not far away from being available once again. If reports are to be believed, though, he may well have already played his last game for United.

Luke Shaw

Status: Major doubt
Type of injury: Hamstring
Possible return date: January 19 (vs. Liverpool)

The exact extent of Luke Shaw's injury has not yet been revealed since he pulled out of the Norwich City game in the warm-up due to a hamstring problem. However, the England international missed the midweek win over Wolves and is considered a major doubt for this one too.

MANCHESTER UNITED'S SUSPENSION LIST

United have no players suspended for this contest.
