Romelu Lukaku's record vs. Liverpool

Ahead of Liverpool's league trip to Manchester United this weekend, Sports Mole looks at Romelu Lukaku's scoring record against the Reds.

After putting his questionable record against top-six rivals to one side with a key goal against former club Chelsea last month, Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku now has Liverpool in his sights.

The Belgium international has an impressive overall record since arriving at Old Trafford from Everton last summer, scoring 22 goals in 40 appearances, including eight in his last 11.

Lukaku had previously failed to score in 10 matches against the established top six prior to his strike against Chelsea, failing to so much as register a shot on target in those key games.

Here, Sports Mole looks closely at Lukaku's past record against Liverpool during his time with Chelsea, West Bromwich Albion, Everton and Man United.

Lukaku record vs. Liverpool

Chelsea

At a time when he was still trying to establish himself in the Chelsea first team - something he never truly managed in three years at Stamford Bridge - Lukaku was given a combined 86 minutes against Liverpool in league and cup competition.

Having failed to net in the 4-1 league thrashing for his side at Anfield in the 2011-12 season, while also being on the wrong end of an EFL Cup quarter-final loss the same season, it is fair to say that the Belgian hitman did not make too much of an impact in this fixture.

West Bromwich Albion

Only upon joining West Brom on loan in 2012-13 did the Anderlecht academy product start making waves in English football, finding the net 17 times in his first full Premier League campaign.

Two of those goals came against Liverpool, scoring once in either league fixture to help Albion pull off a rare double over Liverpool, despite starting both games on the bench - the only time he would be on the winning side against the Merseyside outfit.

Lukaku had less success in that season's EFL Cup third-round tie at The Hawthorns, however, firing a blank when this time handed a start.

Everton

Four seasons with Everton followed on the 24-year-old's path to the Theatre of Dreams, the first of which in 2013-14 was initially on loan. Lukaku certainly enjoyed his first taste of the Merseyside derby, as he netted a brace to help the Toffees to a 2-2 draw in that season's first fixture.

There was to be disappointment in the reverse fixture a few months down the line as his three-match scoring run against Liverpool in the league came to an end, and the Belgian would actually go more than two years before next scoring in the high-profile match.

Lukaku struck late in the first half to cancel out a Danny Ings goal in a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park in October 2015, in what proved to be Brendan Rodgers's final game at the helm. It would also prove to be the last time Lukaku would score against the Reds - four blanks have followed in the 859 days since then.

Lukaku's inability to regularly find the net against teams of Liverpool's calibre, albeit with five in 13 at this stage not exactly being disastrous, was no doubt taken into account by United when handing over an initial £75m to Everton last summer.

Those fears were certainly not allayed in October's borefest at Anfield, a match that saw Jose Mourinho come under fire for going ultra-defensive to hold on for a goalless draw. Lukaku managed just one touch in the opening 23 minutes and 22 all afternoon - one to forget.
