Fabio Capello: 'Wayne Rooney's red card not because of father's arrest'

Fabio Capello blames on-field problems for Wayne Rooney's red card against Montenegro and not the striker's father's arrest.

England manager Fabio Capello has said that Wayne Rooney's red card in their Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro was because of his frustrations on the pitch and not because of his father's recent arrest.

Wayne Rooney Snr. was arrested on Thursday in relation to a betting scam, but was later released on bail.

Manchester United striker Rooney was shown a straight red card in Montenegro on Friday for kicking through an opposition player during England's 2-2 draw.

"I was surprised because it was just in front of me that he kicked the opponent," said Capello. "I think the red card for Rooney was right. The next game he will be suspended so we will try to find new solutions.

"Rooney is an important player but sometimes important players don't play well and make mistakes. It will be good lesson for him and the team. The player is frustrated from [what happened] on the pitch, not from what happened away from it."

The red card means that Rooney will miss England's first match of next year's finals, and could be suspended for a further two games pending a UEFA review.
