Manchester United defender Chris Smalling, currently on loan at Roma, is ambitious about a recall to Gareth Southgate's England squad for Euro 2020

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling is optimistic about a recall to the England squad for Euro 2020.

The 30-year-old has spent this season on loan at Italian side Roma, and has put in a number of impressive performances in the heart of defence.

Smalling's form has garnered interest from Premier League sides Tottenham Hotspur and Everton in recent weeks, but the centre-back is focused on impressing national team manager Gareth Southgate.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Smalling said: "Obviously it's been a couple of years now, but that ambition is always there with England.

"I know that Gareth and the coaching staff have been to a few of my games over here and I guess you know you are in their thoughts if you are playing at a top club.

"I hold those aspirations, and I just try to focus on here and what comes, comes. But I would very much like to be part of [the Euros], for sure."

Smalling has 31 caps for England, however was left out of Southgate's side for the 2018 World Cup.
