Louis van Gaal unsure if Manchester United can win Champions League crown

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has admitted that he is unsure if his team can compete at the highest level in the Champions League.

The Red Devils will return to the group stage of the elite competition following a year-long absence when they take on PSV Eindhoven at Philips Stadion this evening.

Despite spending close to £300m on players over the past 14 months, Van Gaal has suggested that his team may not be on the same level as the other clubs competing.

"The fans will see a Manchester United side who fight for their chances," the Daily Mail quotes Van Gaal as saying. "We have to show on the pitch if we are able to win matches at the highest level - that's the challenge for us now.

"We have to show if we are able to play at this level. I don't know [the answer]. We have to wait and see because the Champions League is a higher level than the Premier League."

As well as PSV, United have been grouped with CSKA Moscow and Wolfsburg.
