Manchester United set a new unwanted Champions League record by conceding the most goals by an English team in the history of the group stage.

Manchester United have set a new unwanted Champions League record for an English team, conceding the most group stage goals in history.

A rotten campaign for Erik ten Hag's side came to an end on Tuesday evening, as they were beaten 1-0 at Old Trafford by Bayern Munich.

That result saw Man United finish bottom of the section, meaning that they will not even have the chance to drop into the Europa League in the new year.

A record of 15 goals conceded across their six group games is the most ever let in by an English club in the competition's history.

Copenhagen took second place to confirm their spot in the last 16 for just the second time in their history, while Galatasaray finished a point above United to claim a Europa League place.

Only four teams have scored more goals than the Red Devils in the group stage, but that only serves to emphasise how leaky their defence was across the campaign.

United only picked up four points in their six group games - beating Copenhagen 1-0 at home and drawing 3-3 in Istanbul against Galatasaray.

The win over Copenhagen provided them with their only clean sheet, and even that came in tense circumstances, as the Danish side missed a penalty with the last kick of the game.

Jacob Neestrup's side made up for that defeat in the reverse fixture though, coming from 2-0 down to win 4-3 at the Parken Stadium on matchday four.

Prior to Man United's double header against Copenhagen, they had already conceded seven in defeats to Bayern and Gala in the first two matchdays.

A 4-3 defeat at the Allianz Arena was made to look respectable by two late Casemiro goals, but United's most disappointing defeat came at home to Gala on matchday two.

After leading 2-1 with 20 minutes to go, Casemiro's sending off contributed to a Gala comeback, as the Turks won at Old Trafford despite also missing a penalty.

The result that all but put the nail in United's coffin was on matchday five when two glaring Andre Onana errors saw the Turkish side mount another comeback, this time from 2-0 down, to draw 3-3 at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium.

Ten Hag's men limped out of the competition in their final fixture, losing 1-0 at home to Bayern, registering just five shots in the entire 90 minutes, but Copenhagen's win over Galatasaray meant that the result at Old Trafford ultimately counted for nothing.
