Man City, Barcelona target Simons to stay with PSG?

Manchester City and Barcelona are reportedly set to miss out on signing highly-rated teenager Xavi Simons, who is close to extending his contract with Paris Saint-Germain.

The 18-year-old's current deal is set to expire next summer and there were suggestions that the midfielder was 'seriously considering' leaving the club for free, which alerted both City and Barca as well as Scottish giants Rangers.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta is believed to have held talks with Simons's agent Mino Raiola over a potential return for his client to the Catalan outfit, where the Dutchman began his career in the famous La Masia academy.

However, Mundo Deportivo, via Fichajes, reports that Simons has been persuaded to commit his future to PSG and sign a new long-term contract.

The report adds that head coach Mauricio Pochettino has spoken directly to the player, informing him of his talent and potential to become a first-team regular in the near future.

Simons has only made three senior appearances for PSG, including 90 minutes in their 3-0 Coupe de France win over Entente Feignies Aulnoye last weekend.

The midfielder has, however, excelled in the UEFA Youth League this term, scoring three goals and registering six assists in six group matches.
