James McAtee future: Bayer Leverkusen in 'direct contact' over summer move for Man City attacker

Bayer Leverkusen have reportedly made contact with Manchester City over a potential summer move for James McAtee.

The England Under-21 international was heavily linked with a switch to the German club in the winter transfer window.

While a move failed to materialise, Leverkusen have kept tabs on the attacker's performances in the second half of the season.

Earlier this month, it was reported that McAtee is 'very open' to the prospect of joining the Bundesliga side ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.

Leverkusen make contact over McAtee switch

According to journalist Florian Plettenburg, Leverkusen have now made direct contact with Man City over a possible transfer for the 22-year-old this summer.

There are also clubs from the Premier League and Serie A that could join Leverkusen in the race for McAtee's signature.

The update states that McAtee has not reached a verbal agreement with any of his potential suitors despite being the subject of transfer interest.

From Man City's perspective, Pep Guardiola recently made it clear that he wants McAtee to remain part of his squad for next season.

McAtee searching for regular game time

While Guardiola wants McAtee to stay put, the player is willing to consider a departure if it offers him the chance to get regular game time.

The attacking midfielder has only started seven of his 24 competitive appearances this season ahead of Tuesday's Premier League meeting with Aston Villa.

McAtee could take inspiration from Cole Palmer, who has established himself as a key part of Chelsea's side after he left the Citizens in 2023.

McAtee may also have aspirations of breaking into the England squad ahead of next year's World Cup, which he will only be able to do if he is playing regularly at a high level.

With that said, Guardiola clearly believes in McAtee's ability, and there is a possibility that he could see his minutes increase if he stays at the Etihad Stadium for next season.
