Patrick Vieira: 'Man City concentrating on youth players'

Vieira: 'No more big spending'

Patrick Vieira insists that Manchester City will concentrate on the club's youth system instead of spending large sums of money in the transfer market in the future.

Patrick Vieira has hinted that Manchester City will no longer be spending big money in the transfer market.

The Citizens have consistently spent large sums to bring players to the Etihad Stadium but the club's Football Development Executive has suggested that they have changed their policy.

"In the past we spent money because we wanted to build a successful team quickly," Vieira told talkSPORT. "When you want to bring in big-name players you have to spend money.

"Now we have a really young team and in football there are always cycles. I believe Manchester City are now starting a cycle that will give us time to start working with youth team players.

"The football academy is important when you believe in youth development. If you want to be one of the best clubs in the world, you have to give young talent a chance."

The club's new academy is expected to be completed in 2014.
