Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has defended the form of his captain Vincent Kompany.
The 28-year-old made two costly mistakes for the Citizens in their 2-1 defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League, as his errors allowed Luis Suarez to strike twice in the first half at the Etihad Stadium.
However, Pellegrini has backed the Belgium international to bounce back in his side's next few matches, starting against Liverpool on Sunday.
He told reporters: "Vincent is an experienced player with a strong character. He must receive the criticism that everyone receives when our team doesn't have the performance that everyone hopes for.
"I think it's not a problem for him, I am sure that he will have a strong reaction."
When asked if Kompany was still among Europe's best defenders, Pellegrini added: "I think he is a great player."
Kompany has made 25 appearances for City in all competitions this season.
