Jerome Boateng: 'Kevin De Bruyne could struggle in Premier League'

Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng suggests that Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne could struggle to adapt to the Premier League after his £54.5m move last month.

Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng has warned Manchester City's record signing Kevin De Bruyne that he could struggle to adapt to the Premier League, which is "nothing like" the Bundesliga.

The 27-year-old spent one season at City before returning to the Bundesliga in 2011, and the German international insists that 24-year-old De Bruyne will have a lot of pressure to cope with following his £54.5m move from Wolfsburg last month.

Speaking to German magazine Kicker, Boateng said: "The transfer fee they paid for him brings enormous pressure with it. Manchester City have brought him in like he is the Messiah. They are expecting miracles from him.

"But life in the Premier League is nothing like in the Bundesliga. Referees don't whistle for fouls as often and the game is a lot faster as a result.

"A lot of teams still play long balls, even if City themselves employ a different style."

De Bruyne could make his Manchester City debut against Crystal Palace on Saturday.
