The Football Association charge Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry for verbally abusing a match official during the Manchester derby at the weekend.

The Football Association have charged Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry with verbally abusing a match official during the Manchester derby on Sunday.

The news comes as additional fallout to the fierce clash between Manchester City and Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium at the weekend, which resulted in a 3-2 victory for the Red Devils.

The FA have claimed that the England international used "abusive and/or insulting words" towards a match official during the clash, which was overshadowed by incidents that occurred off the pitch, including United defender Rio Ferdinand sustaining a blow to the eye after a fan threw an object from the crowd.

Barry has until 4pm on Thursday to respond to the charge.
