Pep Guardiola has provided a positive injury update on summer signing Rayan Ait-Nouri ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium.
The 24-year-old left-back was forced to withdraw early during last week’s 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur after twisting his left ankle.
Ait-Nouri, who was handed his first start as Citizens player at the Etihad Stadium, attempted to carry one after receiving treatment, before being substituted and gingerly walking down the tunnel in the 23rd minute.
Guardiola was unable to give a definitive update on Ait-Nouri’s condition after the match, with the former Wolves defender subsequently emerging as a doubt for this weekend’s trip to Brighton.
However, the Catalan coach has now confirmed that Ait-Nouri is fit and available for selection, revealing at his pre-match press conference on Friday that “He’s fine”.
Ait-Nouri has also been called up to the Algeria national team ahead of World Cup qualifiers against Botswana and Guiana next week.
Guardiola issues Savinho update, offers Rodri support after Spain call-up
Guardiola has also issued a brief update on the fitness of winger Savinho, who has missed Man City’s opening two league matches with an unspecified injury at a time when he continues to be linked with a transfer to Tottenham before next Monday’s deadline.
Asked if he expected Savinho to return from his injury after the international break, Guardiola told reporters: "I hope so, I hope so, yeah”.
On speculation surrounding the Brazilian, Guardiola added: "Monday is the finish of the transfer window and at the next press conference you can ask me about that. Don't ask me about rumours, potential arrivals, or potential flights. So, next week!"
Meanwhile, Guardiola has said that he supports the decision for star midfielder Rodri to be called up by Spain over the international break and hopes that the Ballon d'Or winner can gain valuable minutes to build up his fitness and rhythm following a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
“I never spoke with the manager for Spain ever (about Rodri’s fitness), said the Man City boss. “Of course he feels better and needs minutes. I think they talk to each other and they decide who to select.
“If the player is fit, I always support that they go to the national team. I said in Italy [for Palermo friendly] that Rodri I think after next international break he’ll be better. Try against Wolves, Spurs, Brighton to play for a few minutes.”
Guardiola did not provide a fresh update on the fitness of Josko Gvardiol - who is yet to play for City this season - but the defender is likely to be considered for a return to the matchday squad having taken part in training over the last week.
