How Manchester City could line up against Marseille

Sports Mole looks at how Manchester City could line up for their Champions League showdown with Marseille on Wednesday evening.

Manchester City will be looking to maintain their unbeaten record in the 2020-21 Champions League when they welcome Marseille to the Etihad Stadium for their final game in Group C.

Pep Guardiola's men have already been assured of their place in the next round and will see this game as nothing less than a warm-up for the weekend's trip to Manchester United in the highly-anticipated derby.

The Premier League giants trounced Marseille 3-0 on their own turf when the sides first met back in October, and Guardiola witnessed his team ease to a 2-0 victory over Fulham at the weekend.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how Manchester City could line up for the visit of Marseille, who currently sit bottom of the group.

Guardiola has plenty of up-and-coming players waiting for their opportunity to shine on the international stage, but the Spaniard has affirmed that he will be taking this match seriously despite it being a dead rubber.

The City boss only has one injury concern to contend with in the form of star striker Sergio Aguero, who is a major doubt with a knee problem, but the Argentine would not be expected to line up here either way.

Zack Steffen is waiting in the wings for a start in goal and is likely to be given the nod ahead of Ederson in this one, and the American may find two new centre-backs in front of him as Eric Garcia and Nathan Ake look to feature over Ruben Dias and John Stones - the latter of whom has enjoyed somewhat of a revival in City colours recently.

Kyle Walker has been given a rest for the past week so may return to the fold here ahead of Joao Cancelo, while on the other side of defence, Benjamin Mendy could have the night off before the trip to Old Trafford and allow Oleksandr Zinchenko the chance to impress.

Rodri has started four of City's five Champions League games this term but is another player who is in line for a well-earned rest, which should see Fernandinho occupy a spot in the middle of the park alongside Ilkay Gundogan, with no risks being taken over Kevin De Bruyne ahead of the Manchester Derby.

Raheem Sterling won his 20th penalty in the Premier League against Fulham - a new top-flight record - and the 25-year-old is one of the few players who could retain his place in the side for this one, with Guardiola otherwise expected to shuffle the pack up top.

Bernardo Silva should replace Riyad Mahrez on the right-hand side, while Phil Foden is likely to occupy the number 10 role ahead of fellow proteges Tommy Doyle, Felix Nmecha and Cole Palmer, all of whom will be vying for some more minutes in Europe this week.

With Aguero sidelined, Ferran Torres is expected to be given the chance to build on the three Champions League goals he has already notched up for the Citizens, and the 20-year-old could lead the line as Guardiola looks to keep Gabriel Jesus fresh for the Manchester derby.
