Manchester City booked their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League by beating Roma 2-0 at the Stadio Olimpico.

Following a goalless first half, Samir Nasri fired the Citizens ahead with a powerful effort into the top corner.

They wrapped up the win late on when Pablo Zabaleta raced onto Nasri's pass and slotted home to secure his side's passage through to the last 16.

Find out the action unfolded below.

Good evening everyone! It's the sixth and final matchday of this season's Champions League group stages and there is still plenty left to be decided. Bayern Munich may be safely through from Group E, but Roma and Manchester City will be bidding to join them in the last 16 in a winner takes all clash in Rome.

The late drama that took place in the previous matchday has set this group up for an explosive finale tonight. Two weeks ago in the evening's early kick off, Roma were within seconds of recording a victory over CSKA Moscow, but a late goal from Vasili Berezutski deep into stoppage time kept alive the Russian side's hopes of reaching the last 16.

Later that night there was to be even more drama as City took on Bayern. The Citizens took control early on when Mehdi Benatia was sent off and Sergio Aguero scored from the spot. However, the 10 men of Bayern turned the game around before half time through Xabi Alonso and Robert Lewandowski. A defeat looked certain for City, until Aguero scored twice more in the last five minutes to win the game to revive his side's flagging hopes of getting out of the group.

Here's where it all gets a bit complicated. There a number of scenarios that mean any one of City, Roma and CSKA can all go through. Roma will definitely go through with a victory, while a goalless draw will be enough if CSKA fail to beat Bayern. City will go through with a win or a score draw, as long as they better CSKA's result. If both of tonight's games end in a draw, then Roma will go through.

I'll be sure to keep you informed of any goals at the Allianz Arena as the night progresses. It really is a strange scenario that any one of three teams could progress or crash out of Europe altogether. Right, the team news is in, so let's take a look at those all-important lineups.

ROMA XI: De Sanctis, Yanga-Mbiwa, Maicon, Holebas, Manolas, Nainggolan, Pjanic, Keita, Ljajic, Totti, Gervinho

MANCHESTER CITY XI: Hart, Zabaleta, Demichelis, Mangala, Clichy, Fernandinho, Fernando, Navas, Nasri, Milner, Dzeko

ROMA SUBS: Curci, Astori, Strootman, Iturbe, De Rossi, Florenzi, Destro

MANCHESTER CITY SUBS: Cabellero, Sagna, Kolarov, Boyata, Lampard, Silva, Jovetic

Let's begin with the home side, who have restored a number of key players to their starting XI following a draw against Sassuolo at the weekend. Captain Francesco Totti and Gervinho are back in the attack, where they will join the in-form Adem Ljajic. Mattia Destro and Juan Iturbe are the duo to make way for them.

Perhaps rather surprisingly Daniele de Rossi is only named on the bench, with Seydou Keita chosen to take his place. Radja Nainggolan is another who returns to the midfield, which is completed by Miralem Pjanic. In the defence there is one change for Roma, as Maicon is back and comes in for Alessandro Florenzi.

Meanwhile, Manchester City have been forced into making a few changes. The biggest miss for them is Sergio Aguero, who is out with a knee ligament injury that he sustained against Everton. Edin Dzeko is chosen to start in his place as the lone striker ahead of Stevan Jovetic. The Citizens are also without the suspended Yaya Toure, so Fernandinho comes in alongside Fernando.

Another huge blow for City is the absence of their captain. Vincent Kompany had trained with his teammates ahead of tonight's match, but he doesn't make the squad. It means that Martin Demichelis and Eliaquim Mangala continue at the heart of the defence. There is one positive, as David Silva is back from injury and starts the night on the bench.

Heading into tonight's crucial match, it's clear that Manchester City are in their best form of the season. They have won their last five games have closed the gap on leaders Chelsea at the top of the Premier League to just three points. Impressive away victories over Sunderland and Southampton in the past 10 days have also added weight to their renewed title challenge.

However, those wins have come at a cost. In the early minutes of Saturday's 1-0 win over Everton, Sergio Aguero was forced off and he is now facing a month out with a knee ligament injury. His loss is such a huge blow to the club and it is hard to imagine just where City would be without his 19 goals in 20 games this season.

Yaya Toure's suspension is also a big miss for the club and they could have done with his influence against a Roma midfield that contains the likes of Seydou Keita and Miralem Pjanic. Other players like Vincent Kompany and David Silva have struggled in recent weeks, but the Spaniard is back among the substitutes tonight.

City won't need to be reminded about how poorly their Champions League campaign had gone up until their late win over Bayern. They had not won any of their opening four group matches and things looked over for them after a 2-1 home defeat against CSKA. The club has often been criticized for their poor form in the tournament and a victory tonight could be the catalyst for European success.

Manuel Pellegrini's side may be playing well, but their opponents this evening are also enjoying a positive spell. The Italians are flying high in Serie A and are currently three points behind leaders Juventus. They come into tonight's game off the back of a 2-2 draw with Sassuolo, after coming from two goals down thanks to a double from Adam Ljajic, which included a stoppage-time penalty.

Before that game at the weekend they had won their last three in the league. It also brought to an end a run of seven league wins at the Stadio Olimpico, but a number of players were rested for tonight's big European tie.

The only team that have beaten Roma at home this season is Bayern Munich and the Germans did it in some style. Pep Guardiola's side produced a stunning display to crush the Giallorossi 7-1 and they followed that up with a comfortable 2-0 win at home a couple of weeks later.

Rudi Garcia has not allowed his side to become too disenchanted by those Bayern games and it quite clear that German side are on a completely different level at the moment from most teams in Europe. He will have been disappointed that they allowed a 1-0 lead to slip in the dying seconds of their last match against CSKA, but even a victory in that game would have left them needing to avoid a defeat against City tonight.

PREDICTION: We really could be in for some game tonight in Rome. It was very evenly matched when they last met and it should be another close encounter. City will obviously miss Aguero and Toure, but they have more than enough players to trouble Roma. The same can be said of the visitors, who possess plenty of pace in the final third to get in behind. I'm going to predict this one to end in a 1-1 draw, and coupled with a defeat for CSKA in Bayern, I see City making it through to the knockout stages.

We've just heard the Champions League anthem ringing out around the ground and the start of tonight's match is just moments away. Don't forget that you can keep up to date with our live commentary from every game across Europe this evening.

KICKOFF! We are underway at the Stadio Olimpico!

Roma are very much on top in the opening minutes and Gervinho is looking lively. The Ivorian has shown his threat from the start and after an exchange of passes with Pjanic he gets in down the left and forces the first corner of the night. The resulting set piece comes to nothing though, as Pjanic's delivery finds the side netting.

SAVE! City have their keeper to thank for not falling behind. Totti threads a wonderful ball through to Holebas, who had made a great run from full back. He takes a touch to cut inside and goes for goal, but Hart is out quickly to smother his close-range effort.

The hosts are still well in command and are keeping a firm grasp of the possession. City are working hard to close them down to try and force the mistake, but they just can't seem to string any number of passes together when they do win the ball.

It seems that a tactic of Roma's in the opening stages of this game is to try and get their forwards in behind with long balls over the top. Gervinho certainly has the pace to cause a number problems and Mangala does well on this latest occasion to track his run and clear the danger.

City have started to come into the game and they have their first attempt on goal of the night. Following a decent move, Clichy gets in down the left and whips a ball into the middle for Dzeko, but the Bosnian ends up putting his header well over the bar.

There is much more threat in the City attack and they cause a real moment of panic when Nasri drives through the middle and picks out the run of Navas ahead of him. The Spaniard then gets to the byline and drills in a low cross, but none of his teammates are able to connect with the ball.

I can tell you that we have had a goal in Germany. Unsurprisingly it's Bayern who have the lead against CSKA thanks to a penalty from Thomas Muller. That means that as things stand, Roma will be heading through to the last 16.

CHANCES! City have taken some time to get into the match, but they are causing much more a threat now and Milner forces De Sanctis to parry his low drive. Moments later Roma break down the other end and Gervinho bursts into the box, before firing a strike across goal just wide of the far post.

City are looking the side more likely to score the opening goal at this moment in time. They are getting in down the right with ease and they work another opening when Nasri is slipped through, before squaring the ball for Dzeko. It is slightly behind the forward who can't get clean contact and skies the ball over the bar, but Pellegrini will certainly be pleased at what he is seeing.

The visitors do end up putting the ball in the net, but it has been ruled out. Navas was picked out on the edge of the box and fired in a strike that deflected past the keeper, but the whistle had already been blown for a foul by Dzeko on Holebas in the build up.

CHANCE! Manolas and Yanga-Mbiwa just can't seem to handle Dzeko at the moment. The striker has another opportunity when he gets free at the near post to meet a fine cross from Navas, but he ends up flicking the ball across goal and just wide.

The game has just calmed down a bit after a frantic few minutes. It's still Roma who are dominating the possession, but they are aware of the threat that City posses down the flanks. Just a reminded that this result will be enough to send the Italians through to the knockout stages.

There is a real sense of nervousness in the crowd every time City get on the ball and come forward. There is far more purpose in their attacks than those of the home side and Roma have not really threatened since Gervinho's miss around 15 minutes ago.

We know how good Maicon can be when he lets fly and the Brazilian gets forward to join in with the attack. He works some space and fires in a powerful effort, but he hits it straight down the middle and Hart makes a comfortable save.

CHANCES! Once again both teams come close to a goal within the space a minute. Gervinho has an opening when he latches onto a long ball from Nainggolan and drives into the box before firing straight at Hart. Soon after the visitors are on the attack and Milner bursts onto Navas' through ball, before seeing his attempt blocked by De Sanctis.

YELLOW CARDS! Dzeko and Yanga-Mbiwa are both booked by the referee following a clash between the pair.

HALF-TIME: Roma 0-0 Manchester City

No stoppage time is added on at the end of the half and both teams head into the break all square in Rome. There has been just a handful of chances, in what has been a very evenly contested match. What it means, is that Roma are currently heading through to the last 16, with City dropping down to the Europa League.

Roma have been the more dominant side in possession and that is summed up by their share of 58% of the ball. They have also worked one more shot on goal, with seven attempts compared to six from City. Milner and Gervinho have had two efforts each, but neither were able to find the back of the net.

I'm sure that Manuel Pellegrini will be pleased at the efforts from his players after enduring a difficult start to the night. They only need to score one goal and the likes of David Silva and Stevan Jovetic are available on the bench to add some more attacking threat.

Of course, Roma are in control and they too have a number of players capable of helping them to get the result they need. Juan Iturbe scored and set up a couple of goals in their first Champions League match, while Mattia Destro and Alessandro Florenzi also offer plenty of danger to the opposition.

Manchester City take the kick off and get the second half started.

It's been a scrappy start to the second half and we are yet to see either side test the keeper. City have managed to get in behind though, but after Dzeko was slipped in he was forced out wide and saw his attempted cross blocked behind. Gervinho also managed to burst clear at the other end, but the Ivorian was flagged offside.

Roma are starting to put together a real spell of pressure and they win a corner after good work from Maicon. The ball is eventually worked to Pjanic, who whips a wonderful ball into the box, but it goes just over the head of his teammates before a strike from Totti is blocked.

It's City's turn to enjoy a positive moment in the attacking third as they peg Roma back on the edge of their own box. Clichy then gets in down the left and delivers a really dangerous ball across the six-yard box, but Roma manage to scramble it clear.

SHOT! Out of absolutely nothing Pjanic forces the keeper into a save. The Bosnian picks the ball up around 25 yards out and drills in a low strike that is pretty much straight at Hart, but he still needs to get everything behind it and parry the ball to safety.

GOAL! Roma 0-1 Manchester City (Samir Nasri)

What a stunning goal this is by Nasri. The Frenchman picks the ball up just outside the box and comes inside, before firing a brilliant strike into the top corner and out of the reach of De Sanctis. That goal means that City are heading through, leaving Roma needing two goals to secure their passage to the last 16.

Roma have it all to do now and there has been an urgency injected into their play. They can no longer be content to see the game out and hope for a goalless draw, with the Europa League now beckoning for them.

SHOT! Roma's chances since the break have come from range and this latest effort is no different. Nainggolan is the man with the strike as he blasts a speculative looking shot goalwards that has plenty of power, but is quite easily tipped over the bar by Hart.

CHANCE! It's another chance for Roma and Ljajic really should do better here. He shows great skill to come inside the box and rides a couple of challenges before blasting a strike over the bar. From that sort of distance the keeper should have had some work to do.

SUBSTITUTIONS: There has been a change made by each side. For Roma, Iturbe is on for Ljajic, while Silva replaces Navas for City.

SUBSTITUTION: Roma have made another change, as Destro comes on to replace Totti.

OFF THE POST! Roma are within inches of leveling the scores. Pjanic whips a great free kick into the box and Manolas rises to power a header onto the post. The hosts have another chance soon after, as Demichelis scrambles an effort from a corner off the line.

It was all looking rather quiet for Roma until those recent chances on goal. They are still struggling to put together any decent moves in the final third, with City doing a great job of closing them down and then looking to counter.

SUBSTITUTION: City make their second change of the match, with Jovetic on to replace Dzeko.

City are looking comfortable at the moment and they are managing to keep possession deep inside their opponents half. The crowd are getting increasingly frustrated with their teams efforts and the players are not helping by conceding the ball so cheaply when they are in desperate need of a goal.

We've had some news in from the Allianz Arena that Bayern have taken a 2-0 lead over CSKA Moscow. That goal further secures City's place in second in the group, with a late comeback looking very unlikely now for the Russians.

GOAL! Roma 0-2 Manchester City (Pablo Zabaleta)

There is no way back for Roma now, as City take a 2-0 lead at the Olimpico. It's Zabaleta of all people who scores, as he bursts into the box to latch onto Nasri's pass, before confidently slotting the ball into the far corner.

SUBSTITUTION: City make their final change of the match, with Nasri coming off to be replaced by Kolarov.

That goal has just killed off any hopes Roma had of winning the match. They look completely flat and it's City who are passing the ball around with ease in their half of the pitch as they await the final whistle.

FULL-TIME: Roma 0-2 Manchester City

What a result for Manchester City. They needed to produce something special in Rome and that's exactly what has happened this evening. Samir Nasri's stunning goal and Pablo Zabaleta's late second has sealed their passage to the last 16.

I'm afraid that's all we've got time for after another memorable night in the Champions League. I'll be bringing you match analysis and player ratings of tonight's game so stay tuned for that. I hope you enjoy the rest of your evening. Goodbye!
