Liverpool transfer news: Reds face Marc Guehi competition as Premier League rival make 'official approach'

Manchester United have reportedly made an 'official approach' to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. 

Premier League champions Liverpool have been heavily linked with a move for the Eagles defender, and the Reds reportedly have had two bids rejected, as they refuse to meet his asking price. 

Guehi is in his final year at Selhurst Park, and Steve Parish has recently admitted that the club may have to sell the 25-year-old this summer to avoid losing him on a free transfer next year.

Liverpool have spent over £250m to sign as many as seven players this summer, but the Reds are still looking to add one defender and a striker before the end of the transfer window.

According to a report from Football Transfers, the Red Devils have made an official approach to sign Guehi, but no offer has been placed. 

The report claims that United's initial approach was exploratory at this stage, where they enquired about Palace's asking price and the player's willingness to move to Old Trafford. 

The Red Devils have bolstered their forward department this summer by signing Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha, but they need quality players in other areas, especially in defence. 

In case United fail to sign the England international, they have earmarked Bayern Munich centre-back Dayot Upamecano as an alternative target.

The Reds need one top-quality centre-back this summer after selling Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen, with Joe Gomez and Rhys Williams remaining as back-up options for Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.

What remains to be seen is whether Palace would allow Guehi to leave this summer at a reasonable price, as surely Liverpool are not going to pay £48m for a player who will become a free agent in 12 months. 

Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United have also been credited with an interest in Guehi, but the Magpies have shown no willingness to pay over the odds for the centre-back. 

Palace can take the risk of keeping their skipper with them for one more season, but there is no guarantee that Guehi would sign a new deal at Selhurst Park.
