Liverpool receive Marc Guehi transfer boost as Palace chief makes honest admission over potential sale

Liverpool receive Guehi boost as Palace chief makes transfer admission

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has admitted that captain Marc Guehi could be sold this summer amid interest from Liverpool.

Guehi lifted the Community Shield on Sunday after the Eagles held their nerve in a penalty shootout against Arne Slot's side.

However, there is a possibility that Guehi could swap clubs before the transfer window closes for business at the start of September.

A recent report claimed that Liverpool have already failed with two bids for the England international, with the Reds reluctant to meet Palace's asking price.

However, Palace will be wary of pricing themselves out a deal, especially as Guehi is now in the final year of his contract.

Parish has now admitted that the club may have to sell the 25-year-old this summer to avoid losing him on a free transfer next year.

“Yes. I mean, we’d have to, of course,” Parish said when asked by a reporter whether he would consider tempting bids for Guehi.

“For players of that calibre to leave on a free, it’s a problem. No doubt about it, unfortunately.

“We had one bid [last summer], but Joachim [Andersen] went [to Fulham], and we couldn’t afford to lose both of them. We then had another bid in January, but that was a difficult situation as well, and the player had a point of view on that one.

“So we just have to see what happens, but it needs a new contract or a conclusion of some kind.”

Liverpool searching for defensive reinforcements

Liverpool's defence was a topic of discussion following Sunday's Community Shield, which saw the Reds give away a lead on two occasions in regulation time.

The Reds also conceded in all five of their pre-season friendlies, including four goals against AC Milan and two in their second of two games against Athletic Bilbao.

With Joe Gomez injured, Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate are the only two senior central defenders available to slot ahead of Friday's Premier League opener against Bournemouth.

Liverpool are still looking to replace Jarell Quansah, who completed a move to Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen earlier this summer.
