Georginio Wijnaldum rejects new Liverpool contract amid Barcelona links?

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum reportedly rejects a new long-term deal at the club and could join Barcelona on a free transfer next summer.

Georginio Wijnaldum has rejected a new contract offer from Liverpool, according to a report.

The 29-year-old's current deal at Anfield expires next summer, meaning that he will be free to open talks with foreign clubs in January as things stand.

Barcelona have been credited with an interest in his signature following Ronald Koeman's arrival as manager, with the pair having worked together for Netherlands.

The Spanish giants have reportedly been banned from signing Wijnaldum this summer, but Football Insider claims that they have received a boost in their hopes of bringing him in on a free transfer in 2021.

The report claims that the Dutch international has rejected the offer of a new long-term contract extension on Merseyside following months of talks between the two parties.

Wijnaldum has seen competition for places in Jurgen Klopp's side increase this summer following the arrival of Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich.

Wijnaldum has made 189 appearances for Liverpool since joining in 2016, playing a key role in the club's Champions League, Premier League and FIFA Club World Cup triumphs over the past two seasons.
