Liverpool transfer news: Attacker 'very close' to £69.9m move in latest FSG masterstroke

Another Merseyside masterstroke as Liverpool 'very close' to £69.9m attacker sale

Liverpool attacker Luis Diaz is supposedly 'very close' to joining Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in a deal worth just under £70m.

The Colombia international is understood to have informed the Reds of his desire to leave this summer, and Bayern have already failed with one approach for his services.

Vincent Kompany's side have not given up trying to lure him to the Allianz Arena, though, and Diaz was absent from Saturday's 4-2 friendly loss to AC Milan due to the speculation surrounding his future.

Arne Slot confirmed after the game that the 28-year-old was left out of the squad as a result of the ongoing uncertainty, although he was still expected to fly to Japan for Wednesday's fixture against Yokohama F. Marinos.

Diaz may have played in a Liverpool kit for the final time, though, as journalist Alex Crook reports that Bayern are now 'very close' to shaking hands with the Premier League champions over a deal for the former Porto man.

Liverpool, Bayern discussing 'final details' over Diaz transfer

A separate update from Sky Sports News claims that talks between the two clubs are now at an advanced stage, and the 'final details' of the proposed transfer are being discussed.

Bayern's first offer which fell short was believed to be in the €67m (£58.6m) range, but the Bavarians have now lodged an improved bid worth €80m (£69.9m) and are increasingly hopeful of reaching an agreement with Liverpool.

Liverpool have been determined to hold onto the South American this summer, but after Diaz informed the Reds of his unwavering desire to move on, the Premier League winners had 'little option' but to entertain Bayern's advances.

Diaz's switch to the Allianz Arena will see Liverpool make a healthy profit on the £47.2m they paid Porto for his services in January 2022, since when he has come up with 41 goals and 23 assists in 148 appearances for the Reds in all competitions.

The 28-year-old produced 17 goals and eight assists in a half-century of matches during the 2024-25 campaign, including 13 strikes in the Premier League as he won his first-ever English top-flight title.

Diaz to Bayern transfer: Liverpool's money men do it again

With every Liverpool incoming or outgoing, it is easy for rival supporters to feel envious, as sporting director Richard Hughes and Fenway Sports Group's CEO of Football Michael Edwards continue to pull off masterstroke after masterstroke.

Making a profit of over £20m on a 28-year-old attacker is another exceptional piece of business from the Reds' money men, who have made a habit of garnering sizeable fees through summer sales.

Liverpool managed to make £8.4m by offloading Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid a few weeks before his contract ended, while also pocketing over £30m through the sale of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen.

The monies raised from Diaz's sale will take Liverpool's transfer incomings this summer to over £100m, no doubt helping to fund a possible record-breaking move for Newcastle United marksman Alexander Isak.
