Liverpool set a new English top-flight record by opening up an unprecedented 22-point lead at the top of the Premier League table with victory over Southampton.

Liverpool have broken yet another record courtesy of their 4-0 victory over Southampton at Anfield on Saturday, opening up an unprecedented 22-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

Jurgen Klopp's side withstood a string of Southampton chances in the first half but ran riot after the break, when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jordan Henderson scored before Mohamed Salah added a brace.

The result means that Liverpool have now taken 100 points from the last 102 on offer in the Premier League, including 73 from a possible 75 so far this season.

Having accumulated the most points at this stage of a campaign in the history of any of Europe's top five leagues, Liverpool have now also built the biggest lead at the end of a day in the 131-year history of English top-flight football.

City have the chance to close that gap back to 19 points when they face Tottenham Hotspur in North London on Sunday.

However, Liverpool need just seven more wins to guarantee their first English crown for 30 years and are currently on course to finish the campaign with 110 points, comfortably clear of Man City's 100-point record.
