Virgil van Dijk: 'People don't know what happened ahead of Liverpool move'

Virgil van Dijk insists that nobody knows what went on behind the scenes when he tried to force through a move to Liverpool from Southampton.

Virgil van Dijk has claimed that the public do not know the real story behind his move to Liverpool from Southampton.

The Netherlands international made it clear last summer that he wanted to leave St Mary's, but he was forced into staying put.

Liverpool publicly withdrew their interest in the centre-back after being accused by the Saints of tapping up, but Van Dijk finally got his desired move.

Early in the January transfer window, the 26-year-old finalised a transfer to the Merseyside outfit, who reportedly spent £75m to secure his signature.

"People don't know what really happened," Van Dijk told BBC Sport. "I kept my head down and kept playing. I was out for eight months and was just happy to play again.

"I just switched on again after the transfer window in the summer. I didn't think about anything until I got a phone call from the Southampton board."

Van Dijk has made seven appearances in all competitions for Jurgen Klopp's team since making the move.
