Martinez: I plan to use "world-renowned" Liverpudlians

Newly-appointed Everton manager Roberto Martinez has vowed to make the most of the "world-renowned" hotbed of footballing talent in the city of Liverpool.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney was famously a product of Everton's youth system, while the club's current Player of the Year Leighton Baines was born and raised in the Liverpool area.

Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher have also served local rivals Liverpool with distinction since they made their respective debuts in 1998 and 1996 and Martinez has said that he plans to "take advantage" of the talented footballers that the city churns out.

"The local talent is there [in the city] and it is world-renowned throughout football," Martinez told the club's official website.

"We need to make sure we take advantage of that and make sure we bring the right players and right characters to the football club."

Martinez joined the Blues on a four-year contract last week.
