Klopp: 'We must be patient with Van Dijk'

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says that defender Virgil van Dijk may not perform to his full capabilities until next season.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has suggested that he is prepared to remain patient with January signing Virgil van Dijk.

At the start of 2018, Liverpool spent £75m to sign Van Dijk from Southampton but after just three starts, the Netherlands international was dropped to the bench for the game at Huddersfield Town on Tuesday night.

However, Klopp has indicated that it was part of a long-term strategy with the centre-back, who he feels may not show his best form until next season.

At a press conference, the 50-year-old told reporters: "I'm very happy with him. Few ups and downs. We will see Van Dijk at his best after the summer.

"He has to get used to this style of play. Everton, outstanding, Swansea, good, West Brom, bad game for whole team.

"When Virgil came here he wasn't match fit. I spoke to him about it (leaving him out the other night), he expected it. We have to use the time."

Van Dijk will hope for a recall when Liverpool face Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
