Jurgen Klopp: 'Only Liverpool tried to play football against Atletico Madrid'

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp suggests that Atletico Madrid did not try to play football in the Audi Cup final on Wednesday night.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has claimed that Atletico Madrid preferred to win the Audi Cup over playing football against his side on Wednesday night.

The match at the Allianz Arena ended in a 1-1 draw before a missed penalty from Jordan Henderson led to Liverpool losing the shootout by a 5-4 scoreline.

Klopp has suggested that he was pleased with the performance of his players, but suggested that Atletico could have been more adventurous during the pre-season fixture.

The 50-year-old is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News: "Atletico wanted to win the cup. We did also, but we also wanted to play football, Atletico only wanted to win the cup.

"You could not have a more difficult job against a team like Atletico. They get results and results and results. It was offence against defence. It doesn't make life easy.

"We weren't concentrating for the goal. Second half we did better. We played more football. We deserved the equaliser. One lost challenge on a header shouldn't mean you go behind."

Liverpool will complete their preparation for the new Premier League campaign with a friendly against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.
