Steven Gerrard: 'Liverpool are not in the title race'

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard echoes manager Brendan Rodgers's claims that the Reds are not in the title race this season.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has echoed manager Brendan Rodgers's claims that his side are not in the title race this season.

The Reds sent out a statement of intent by defeating Arsenal 5-1 yesterday, leaving themselves just six points behind league leaders Chelsea, who still face a trip to Anfield.

However, Gerrard insists that the team would go along with Rodgers's beliefs that they weren't contenders for a first Premier League crown since 1990 and calls upon his side to back up the Arsenal result with another win over Fulham on Wednesday.

"According to Brendan we are not [challengers]. Ask the manager. Listen, he said we are not so we are all behind Brendan. We do what he says and he says we are not in the title race, so we carry on pushing for the top four and see where it takes us," Gerrard is quoted as saying by PA.

"I think the dangerous thing after a performance like that is can we motivate ourselves to get close to producing something similar against Fulham? If we do, we will do the same to Fulham. We performed fantastically against Everton and then slipped up against West Brom, having taken the lead. We should have seen that game out.

"The challenge now is can we get three points against Fulham? But we listen to what our leader says and he says we are not in the title race. So we go with that."

Gerrard also rated the performance against Arsenal as one of the top three that he has ever been involved in.
