Virgil van Dijk says that he "will be fine" for Liverpool's trip to Southampton later this week, despite injuring his ankle in the win against Tottenham Hotspur.

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has reassured supporters that he expects to be fit for his side's next Premier League outing.

The Netherlands international required treatment following the Reds' 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday after injuring his ankle.

Van Dijk sustained the damage shortly before Liverpool's dramatic late winner when preventing Moussa Sissoko from scoring in a two-on-one situation.

After undergoing a scan on his ankle it turns out that the 27-year-old did not seriously damage his ligaments, however, meaning that he should be fit for Friday's trip to Southampton.

"I'm gonna be fine," he told reporters when asked about his chances of starting at St Mary's Stadium. "It hurts. We have to take a look at it, but I will be fine for Friday."

Van Dijk has previously played through the pain barrier for Liverpool this season, starting all 32 of their league matches.
