Preview: Liechtenstein vs. Latvia - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's Nations League clash between Liechtenstein and Latvia, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Latvia will be looking to claim a fifth consecutive victory when they travel to the Rheinpark Stadion to face Liechtenstein on Tuesday.

While the visitors sit top of Group 1 in League D, Liechtenstein are rooted to the bottom of the standings, having failed to register a single point across their three UEFA Nations League contests.

Liechtenstein have played all three Nations League campaigns in League D and their stay in the bottom tier looks set to continue following their poor start to the competition.

After losing to 2-0 Moldova, Martin Stocklasa's side were edged out 1-0 by Latvia on matchday two, leaving them bereft of confidence ahead of Friday's encounter with Andorra.

As the contest drifted into the final 15 minutes, Liechtenstein were on course to play out a goalless draw, but two Andorran goals in four minutes ended their hopes of a point despite Livio Meier halving the deficit in stoppage time.

Tuesday's hosts would have at least taken solace from Meier's late goal as it ended a run of eight consecutive games without scoring.

However, after losing their last nine matches and not winning a match since October 2020, hopes of clinching a positive result against Latvia may be slim.

In contrast to their hosts, Latvia are enjoying a successful campaign after collecting maximum points across their three contests.

Andorra were comfortably dispatched on the opening matchday before an Arturs Zjuzins strike gave Latvia a narrow 1-0 victory over Tuesday's opponents.

Following two home games, they embarked on their travels for the first time in the campaign, and it proved to be a successful trip as a brace apiece for Vladislavs Gutkovskis and Janis Ikaunieks helped the visitors clinch a 4-2 win against Moldova.

The result represented Latvia's fourth consecutive victory, while it also extended their current unbeaten run to seven matches.

Another win on Tuesday could see Latvia clinch promotion after just four games if Andorra and Moldova share the spoils in the group's other contest.

Team News

Liechtenstein could be without the services of Sandro Wolfinger, who was withdrawn before half time against Andorra.

Meier came off the bench to replace Wolfinger on Friday, and after scoring late on, the 24-year-old is expected to return to the starting lineup.

Yanik Frick is set to keep his place in the frontline, with the forward looking to add to the three goals that he has scored at international level.

As for the visitors, they are expected to keep changes to a minimum following the 4-2 away victory over Moldova.

There could be a change in midfield with Alvis Jaunzems set to return to the starting XI in place of Andrejs Ciganiks.

Gutkovskis has scored five goals in his last six internationals, and the 27-year-old will have the chance to continue his fine form when he leads the line on Tuesday.

Liechtenstein possible starting lineup:
Buchel; Malin, Beck, Grunenfelder; Meier, Luchinger, Graber, Netzer; Sele, Hasler, Frick

Latvia possible starting lineup:
Steinbors; Savalnieks, Dubra, Cernomordijs, Jurkovskis; Jaunzems, Zjuzins, Tobers, Ikaunieks; Uldrikis; Gutkovskis

We say: Liechtenstein 0-2 Latvia

Liechtenstein enter the contest off the back of nine consecutive defeats, while Latvia are looking to clinch a fifth successive victory, and with the two sides current experiencing an opposite run of results, we think the visitors will claim all three points.
