Leyton Orient, Gillingham friendly called off after serious player injury

Pre-season friendly called off after player injury

A pre-season game between Leyton Orient and Gillingham has been abandoned after one of the players suffered a serious injury.

Gills midfielder Lee Martin, who joined the club from Millwall earlier this summer, suffered a suspected dislocated or broken left ankle.

The 29-year-old, a substitute in the match, was hurt after landing awkwardly 13 minutes before full time, and the game was called off soon afterwards.

Gillingham manager Justin Edinburgh paid tribute to his player, telling reporters: "Our thoughts are with Lee. We hope that he makes a quick recovery.

First-half goals from Jordan Bowery and Jay Simpson had put League Two side Orient 2-0 up at the Matchroom Stadium when the game was abandoned.
