Andy Hessenthaler becomes Orient assistant

Former Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler has been appointed as assistant manager of Leyton Orient.

The 49-year-old will work with Orient boss Ian Hendon, who was Hessenthaler's assistant at Gillingham in the 2010-11 season.

Hessenthaler, who had been part of the Gills coaching staff under Justin Edinburgh, has signed a two-year deal with the League Two side.

"I am delighted to have someone with Andy's experience and knowledge by my side," Hendon told Orient's official website.

"I have worked with him and he is a very good coach. I also played alongside Andy in the same team and know what attributes he will bring to the club.

"Andy will work alongside Kevin Nugent, who remains very much part of my coaching team."

Hessenthaler has managed Gillingham three times, with the latest coming in a three-month caretaker stint last season.
