Can anyone pip Jamie Vardy as Leicester City's player of the year?

The Sports Mole team select who they believe has been Leicester City's player of the season so far - can anyone challenge Jamie Vardy?

Leicester City have enjoyed another stellar campaign in 2019-20 and look set to secure a return to the Champions League once play resumes.

Brendan Rodgers has overseen a dramatic turnaround in form since Claude Puel's time in charge, to the point where the Foxes have experienced a campaign second only to their unforgettable title-winning season of 2015-16.

When play was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic Leicester sat third in the table, eight points clear of fifth-placed Manchester United and only four behind Manchester City in second.

A number of players have made notable contributions to such an impressive campaign, and here the Sports Mole team select who they think has been the best of the lot.

There are a whole host of players who deserve honourable mentions for Leicester, but none of them can quite match the impact of the Premier League's leading scorer Jamie Vardy.

At 33, the Englishman has once again established himself as one of the division's top strikers - he went through a spell from October to December where he scored 11 goals in just eight games, all of which the Foxes won.

Not only is his overall tally of 19 goals impressive, but he has also got those in clinical fashion. Almost 60% of Vardy's shots this season have been on target - the highest in the league - while 54% of those have ended up in the back of the net - also a league-high conversion rate.

A number of Leicester players have enjoyed excellent seasons, but it is difficult to look past Vardy considering his contribution in the final third of the field. Indeed, a record of 19 Premier League goals leaves him at the top of the scoring charts for the 2019-20 campaign.

Vardy has only actually scored twice in the league since the turn of the year, but a stunning run of form in the latter stages of 2019 helped the Foxes pick up a lot of points.

It has been another terrific season for the 33-year-old, who might well have been called upon by England had the European Championships gone ahead this summer.

While Leicester City wouldn't be where they are in the Premier League table without the influence of Caglar Soyuncu and Wilfred Ndidi, you cannot ignore Jamie Vardy's form this season.

Despite failing to score during the opening two months of 2020, Vardy still has 19 goals and four assists to his name, which includes an eight-match streak between October 19 and December 8.

Although only one strike has come against a club currently sitting in the top five, the forward's contribution has put the Foxes on the verge of Champions League qualification.

An argument can be put forward for a number of players, from full-back Ricardo Pereira to Wilfred Ndidi in midfield and Jamie Vardy up top. The latter gets the nod for me, though, given his form in front of goal over the course of the season.

Vardy leads the Premier League scoring charts with 19 goals, while also chipping in with four assists. Should the campaign resume, you would not bet against him scoring the five goals needed to match his tally of 24 in Leicester's title-winning campaign.

Leicester have enjoyed a terrific season and a whole host of players would be worthy of their Player of the Season award, but it is difficult to look past Jamie Vardy for me.

The 33-year-old currently leads the way in the top scorer charts with 19 top-flight strikes this term, a statistic which just makes you appreciate his rise to the pinnacle of English football that little bit more.

Caglar Soyuncu, Ricardo Pereira, James Maddison and Wilfred Ndidi have all thoroughly impressed in Brendan Rodgers's side this season, but Vardy's goals have propelled Leicester into the Champions League places and he is showing no sign of slowing down anytime soon.
