McCarthy confirms "potential" Best deal

Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy has admitted that he is considering whether to sign former Newcastle United striker Leon Best.

The 29-year-old, who most recently played for Rotherham United, has been on trial with the Championship side in recent weeks with the hopes of landing a permanent deal.

McCarthy is thought to be in the market for a striker following the loss of David McGoldrick to an ankle injury.

"[Best] trained with us today and will train with us tomorrow," McCarthy told reporters at a press conference on Thursday. "There is a potential deal on the cards for him.

"He brings something different and if you consider Daryl Murphy has got two or three international breaks coming up, there's potential for [Murphy] to come back with a stress or a strain.

"Didzy (McGoldrick) is out until November, the next 10 to 12 weeks, so an extra bit of firepower won't do us any harm."

The Tractor Boys have also been considering a move for West Ham United prospect Martin Samuelsen but lost out on his services to Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers earlier today.
