Anthony Wordsworth earns Ipswich Town late win

Ipswich Town leave it late to edge out Southend United, beating the League Two side 2-1 at Roots Hall.

Anthony Wordsworth's stoppage-time goal was enough to see Ipswich Town pick up a pre-season victory at League Two Southend United this evening.

The game started with Freddy Eastwood being substituted early in what is his last game for the Seasiders, and he received a standing ovation from the home support inside Roots Hall.

Mick McCarthy's men went close to an opener before the break as Tyrone Mings and Frank Nouble both missed opportunities, but they did take the lead midway through the second half.

Their first goal came from a free kick from Hungarian triallist Balint Bajner, who could join the club from Borussia Dortmund's 'B' side, if he is offered a contract at the Championship outfit.

However, United were back on terms with 16 minutes left when Myles Weston, with his first touch after coming on as a substitute, found the back of the net for Phil Brown's charges.

David McGoldrick came close to bagging a winner in the dying minutes, when he brought a good save out of keeper Ted Smith.

In the end, it fell to Wordsworth, with the last kick of the game, to give the Tractor Boys a victory as they build towards their Championship opener against Fulham next month.
