Adam Clayton fires late winner

A late Adam Clayton goal gives Huddersfield Town all three points.

Adam Clayton's late strike has given Huddersfield Town all three points against Wigan Athletic.

Wigan had the game's first half-chance, as Marc-Antoine Fortune found the ball at his feet following a corner kick, though the forward failed to pick out Martyn Waghorn and the opportunity went begging.

Alex Smithies was called into action shortly after, pulling off a fine save to deny Waghorn's low effort to keep the scoreline level.

A curling effort from the returning Adam Hammill ended up just wide of the post, before Terriers top scorer James Vaughan lost his marker and had a chance of his own to make the breakthrough, though the striker skied his effort over the bar.

Fortune's strike early in the second half was deflected into the side-netting, while Waghorn himself came close to finding the net, but somehow he turned his shot wide of the target from in front of goal.

As the contest looked to be edging to a goalless draw, Clayton unleashed a long-range strike which flew into the back of the net to give Huddersfield a late winner.
