Huddersfield vs Peterborough - prediction, team news, lineups

Both aiming to bounce back from defeats last weekend, Huddersfield Town and Peterborough United will square off in League One action at the John Smith's Stadium on Saturday.

The visitors remain winless after six league outings and sit at the foot of the table, while their hosts find themselves sixth having managed four victories thus far in England's third tier.

Match preview

Huddersfield Town return to action on Saturday aiming to build on a midweek cup victory and return to winning ways in their League One promotion bid.

After failing to bounce back to the Championship at the first time of asking last time around, they turned to Lee Grant to take charge over the summer, and he oversaw an impressive start as the Yorkshire outfit picked up four wins from their first five league games, scoring 10 goals and only conceding three in that time.

That fast start culminated in back-to-back home triumphs and clean sheets against Doncaster Rovers and Stevenage, with Alfie May netting the only goal against the latter, before they played out a 1-1 draw with top-flight Sunderland in the EFL Cup second round and progressed with a penalty shootout win.

The Terriers would see their winning run come to an end last weekend, though, as they visited Yorkshire rivals Barnsley and suffered a 3-1 defeat, having trailed 1-0 with 10 men at the interval following Owen Goodman's red card and fallen two more behind in the second half before Joe Taylor netted a consolation goal in the dying minutes.

Now heading into the weekend on the back of a convincing midweek display, though, having thrashed Newcastle United Under-21s 6-2 in the EFL Trophy with Taylor netting a brace alongside goals from Jack Whatmough, Marcus Harness and Leo Castledine and an own goal, Huddersfield Town will bid to bounce back in the league with a chance to crack the top two if other results go their way.

Their visitors, meanwhile, travel north aiming to put a dismal start to the season behind them with a first win.

Following Championship relegation and back-to-back top-six finishes in League One, Peterborough United ended the 2024-25 term in 18th spot and have experienced an even tougher opening to the new campaign, currently sitting at the bottom of the table having only managed one point from their first six attempts.

That one draw came at home to Bradford City after four straight losses to start the season, but the Posh were unable to kick on, visiting Exeter City last weekend and suffering a 3-0 beating as Jayden Wareham put the hosts head and Josh Magennis helped himself to a brace after the hour mark.

Darren Ferguson's side then hosted Leyton Orient in EFL Trophy action on Tuesday and saw their winless start to the term extended to eight matches, as Jack Moorhouse and Michael Craig sealed a 3-1 win for the away side, who played with 10 men for 65 minutes after Harley Mills had the Posh level at the interval.

With pressure bound to be growing on Ferguson and the squad given their dismal start, Peterborough United head to the John Smith's Stadium on Saturday desperate to begin their improvement with a first victory at the ninth time of asking.

Team News

Huddersfield Town are unable to call on first-choice goalkeeper Owen Goodman, who will serve the second of a three-match ban on Saturday after his red card against Barnsley, while Antony Evans, Jacob Chapman, Mickel Miller and Marcus McGuane remain confined to the treatment room.

In Goodman's absence, Lee Nicholls will continue between the sticks, while Joe Low should return to the defence, likely rejoining Jack Whatmough in the centre.

There is competition for attacking spots in Lee Grant's side, with Joe Taylor hoping to lead the line after his midweek brace despite competition from Alfie May, while Marcus Harness, Leo Castledine and Ruben Roosken will compete to keep their spots in support.

Peterborough United will remain without Alex Bass, Sam Hughes, Rio Adebisi, Ben Woods, Declan Frith and Oscar Wallin for Saturday's trip.

Darren Ferguson added reinforcements to his squad on Deadline Day with the captures of Blackburn Rovers attacker Harry Leonard and Wrexham duo Jacob Mendy and Thomas O'Connor, and they may all earn league debuts as the Posh bid to trigger a reversal in their fortunes.

Fellow new arrival Jimmy-Jay Morgan will also compete for a first start in attack, while Archie Collins will come back into the midfield alongside Brandon Khela from the outset after being reduced to a substitute appearance in their recent EFL Trophy tie.

Goalkeeper Vicente Reyes and defender David Okagbue are both unavailable for the visitors due to international duty.

Huddersfield Town possible starting lineup:

Nicholls; Gooch, Low, Whatmough, Roughan; Kane, Ledson; Harness, Castledine, Taylor; May

Peterborough United possible starting lineup:

Bass; O'Connor, Lees, Kioso; Johnston, Collins, Khela, Mendy; Leonard, Morgan, Odoh

We say: Huddersfield Town 2-0 Peterborough United

In their bid to finally record a first win of the season, Peterborough United face an unenviable trip on Saturday, and we can only envisage them being outclassed by a Huddersfield Town side who are enjoying life under Lee Grant thus far.
