Slomka "delighted" to join Hamburg

New Hamburger SV head coach Mirko Slomka has expressed his delight at having made a swift return to management.

Slomka was confirmed as the new Hamburg boss earlier today, less than two months after being sacked by Hannover in December, replacing Bert van Marwijk at the helm of the struggling Bundesliga side.

The 46-year-old inherits a team who are just one point off the bottom of the table having lost seven league matches in a row.

"I'm delighted to be back and I'm looking forward to the challenge. Hamburg are a great club," Slomka is quoted as saying by PA.

"We need to put in a good performance for the sake of our fans. All that matters is keeping this club in the Bundesliga."

Slomka was in charge of Hannover for almost four years, saving the team from relegation before guiding them to back-to-back Europa League campaigns.
