Slomka appointed new Hamburg coach

Hamburger SV have appointed former Hannover boss Mirko Slomka as their new head coach.

Slomka joins the troubled Bundesliga outfit just 48 hours after they sacked Bert van Marwijk, who had steered the team to seven consecutive league defeats.

Hamburg chairman Carl-Edgar Jarchow was keen to make a quick appointment as his side look to improve upon their current position of 17th place, just one point above Eintracht Braunschweig following their 4-2 defeat to the league's bottom side on Saturday.

"We had to make a quick appointment. I'm glad we were able to conclude these negotiations quickly. We're confident we can move away from 17th place with this coach and this team," Jarchow is quoted as saying by PA.

Slomka, who becomes the team's third head coach of the season and 13th in the last 10 years, was sacked as manager of Hannover in December, having saved them from relegation and guided them to back-to-back Europa League campaigns in three years at the helm.
